In 2025, 391,318 e-bikes were sold, representing approximately 49% of all new bicycle sales.
More strikingly, e-bikes generated around 73% of total bicycle industry revenue, with an average price of approximately €2,872.
The Dutch consumer generally does not need to be convinced that an e-bike is useful.
The question is whether this particular bicycle is good enough to become part of everyday life.
This changes product priorities.
For a daily commuter, a few hundred grams of additional weight may matter more than a headline motor specification.
A comfortable low-step frame can be more valuable than an aggressive frame design.
A belt drive can be more meaningful than a larger battery if it reduces maintenance.

This is why simply taking a European trekking e-bike and reducing its suspension or motor configuration is not necessarily an effective Dutch-market strategy.
The product needs to be redesigned around frequency of use, not simply terrain.
Belgium offers perhaps the most interesting example of how the sales model can influence product demand.
Total bicycle sales reached approximately 578,737 units in 2025, increasing 7.1%, while e-bikes accounted for around 51% of sales.
One particularly strong category was the city/touring e-bike equipped with internal gearing and belt drives. Sales increased by approximately 14%, reaching 144,008 units.
This indicates strong demand for durable, low-maintenance everyday transportation.
But Belgium also has another important opportunity: Speed Pedelecs.
Around 14,058 new Speed Pedelecs were registered in 2025, and approximately 62.4% were obtained through leasing.
Even more importantly, around 97.5% of registrations took place in Flanders.
